Nin Saltworks & Salt Museum
For visitors seeking a deeper experience, when in Rome Nin, do as the Romans did two millennia ago: walk around the Nin salt fields and learn how contemporary man still hand-harvests exceptionally pure, 100% natural sea salt using the Romans’ age-old 5-stage technique involving only seawater, sunlight, and wind. Did you know that the words salary and salad were derived from the word salt because early Romans salted their vegetables and used salt as a method of trade and currency (it could be exchanged for gold, ounce for ounce)? During your visit, you are more than welcome to trade your gold for our salt (not the other way around), ounce for ounce, at our Museum of Salt / gift shop. A short walk across the nearby old stone bridge will unveil the hidden old town of Nin sitting on a small circular island surrounded by a shallow lagoon. Bet you didn’t know that Nin was the birthplace of the Croatian State. It is the oldest royal town in the country and home to many dukes and kings.
