Ozalj Castle
Cross the old wooden bridge over a precipice and step into the entrance tower of this 13th century castle nested atop a rocky cliff towering over the Kupa river. It is noteworthy that the keep was home to Croatia’s two prominent noble dynasties of Zrinski and Frankopan and the origin of the Zrinski-Frankopan rebellion, a turning point in Croatia’s history. Once you’ve soaked up the magnificent vistas, you should head inside the keep to explore a museum with the region’s artifacts dating back 6,000 years and spanning the Late Stone Age, the Copper Age, the Roman period, the migration of nations, the early Middle Ages, and the story of Frankopan and Zrinski families. Just minutes away from the Ozalj castle lies a magnificent specimen of industrial architecture - Croatia’s second oldest hydro-electric power plant dated from 1908 - built in neo-renaissance style and reminiscent of an English castle.
