Vukovar & the Danube Region 3C

  1. Vučedol Culture Museum
  2. Ilok Town Museum & Castle
  3. Ilok Winery & Vintage Wine Cellar

Sitting atop a hill above the town center, this recently fully renovated Baroque castle offers spectacular vistas of the Danube and the Pannonian Plain. Originally built in the 15th century by Nicholas of Ilok, Croatian viceroy and the King of Bosnia, it was captured by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century, and then retaken by the Habsburgs who granted it to the powerful Italian aristocratic Odescalchi family that would own the castle for the next two centuries. If you need more enticement, then check out a state-of-the-art museum display of a bygone aristocratic splendor inside the keep.
