Knin Fortress
Check out all the nooks and crannies of this remarkably well-preserved collection of crag-hugging walls and towers perched on a jagged hilltop just 100m (328ft) above the winding Krka river and the city of Knin – a royal capital during the reign of Demetrius Zvonimir, King of Croatia (1075-1089). The fortress dates back to the 9th century and its interior is a cascading interconnected labyrinth of cobbled alleys, ramps, and stairways encircled by a 2km (1.2mi) long bulwark. Your eyes will thank you for the gorgeous vistas all around, including the Krčić waterfall just 3,4km (2.1mi) to the east. While inside, don’t forget a museum with an impressive collection of archeological and ethnographic artifacts. For centuries, Knin remained a much-coveted military prize, falling to the Ottoman Turks in 1522, the Venetians in 1688, and the Serbian invaders in 1991. In modern-day Croatia, Knin Fortress again took center stage when Croatia’s flag was hoisted on the highest point of the fortress moments after a decisive victory by the Croatian Army against Serbian invaders in the 1995 Operation Storm, the largest European land battle since WW2, which also marked the end of the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence.
