Discover this renowned 12th century castle located minutes away from the Varaždin city center boasting a fine ensemble of baroque buildings, aristocratic mansions, and elegant churches. No wonder Varaždin was Croatia’s capital in the 1700’s. Sit in the main square for coffee and then stroll the cobbled streets to the nearby gleaming-white and turreted castle – a gem of medieval defensive architecture surrounded by a lovingly manicured park. Enter via a drawbridge and wander around to view the archways, courtyards, and chapels of this sprawling castle-fortress. The keep houses 400+ pieces of furniture, paintings, watches, ceramics, decorative objects, insignia, and weapons amassed over centuries and now displayed across 10 rooms furnished according to a timeline of six period styles. Head back outside and walk atop a rampart encircling the moat that was once filled with water from the nearby Drava river. A 10-minute walk west of the castle takes you to the old cemetery – a serene horticultural masterpiece, designed in 1905 by Viennese architect Hermann Helmer.

Open Tuesday – Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday – Sunday 9am-1pm. Closed Mondays, May 1, May 26, June 22, June 25, August 5, August 15, October 10, November 1.
